The Gentle Art

The gentle art of making music. My studio technician Jimi wanted a new computer because the current 8-year-old Intel iMac was too slow and couldn’t run the recent music apps and heavy sample libraries smoothly. So with some reluctance I went shopping at the Apple Store and bought a Mac Studio (Max) computer and a 27″ Studio Display. Getting everything back to work took a long time, almost 20 h. After using the Migration Assistant app, checking and updating a lot of stuff and solving some compatibility issues, I was back in business.

I was also pleasantly surprised by Jimi a few days ago. After ignoring Mr. Bowie’s cat bed for almost 3 years, he finally decided it was time to sleep in this comfortable king size luxurious bed. It seems everybody is very happy right now.

I’ve just started reading The Gentle Art of Tramping by Stephen Graham, originally published in 1926. Stephen Graham was a British journalist, travel-writer, essayist and novelist. The Gentle Art of Tramping is a guide for anyone who has dreamed of taking to the road with nothing more than a bag full of essentials and big ideas. It gives guidance on walking, being open to discovery and being kind – advice as relevant now as it was then. ‘The adventure is not the getting there, it is the on-the-way. It is not the expected; it is the surprise; not the fulfilment of prophecy but the providence of something better than prophesied.’ Tramping is a way of approach, to nature, to your fellow-man, to a nation, to beauty, to life itself.

Enjoy this beautiful day, my friends, wherever you are. Peace, love and understanding.

    • Thank you so much! The book (and writer) was new to me. There was an article about it in the weekend edition of a newspaper and I had to buy the book immediately…

  1. Nice that your assistant has the latest and greatest in equipment now so he can be of even MORE help to you! He looks very regal in the “Bowie Bed”……nothing better than a very comfy place to snooze. The tramping book sounds really interesting – and while I read your description I realized that I am a “Tramper”….I have been tramping my whole life and enjoyed every second of the discoveries and freedom I’ve had along the way. Big Hugs to you and your assistant for reminding me of that!

    Pam (with my assistant Teddy!)

    • Hi Pam. Thank you so much for your kind comment. It seems the book gives you other views on how to experience your walks. I believe it will help to find some peace of mind. So it looks like I’m going for a walk this afternoon…

I’m very lucky my cats are always very gifted and talented technicians… But you got to pay them with lots of treats! 🙂

    • Jimi preferred the bed. Mr. Bowie could play and stay in a box for many hours but Jimi always loses his interest after a few minutes. I don’t have to keep a spare box for Jimi…

  2. That new M1 Mac inspired Jimi to try some more luxury. The book sounds fun. How do you like the M1?

    • Hi Tim. So far (after 5 days) I’m very impressed by the power and the speed of the M1 chip. But maybe that’s not a real surprise because I was using a rather old iMac. Especially in Logic Pro it’s a big improvement. Heavy sample libraries load in a few seconds and no more hick ups while playing heavy projects. There are still a few issues that need to be solved with an update. But I’m very happy with the new mac Studio.

And yes, Jimi was more interested in the bed. I didn’t keep the boxes…

  4. Sounds like an excellent book. We all need some peace, love and understanding, especially here in the U.S. Cats usually gravitate to the best seat in the house. Surprised Jimi took so long to decide to use the bed. Wishing you a delightful summer ahead. • Hi there, my dear friends. I was shocked seeing the news about the shooting in Texas. And there’s the on going war in Ukraine with hundreds children dead… These are really crazy times we’re living in.
Hope you’re all ok and wishing you a great week ending ahead. Jimi sends his regards!

  5. Nice to see Jimi enjoying the bed. I still have the old cardboard “house” that was Yeti’s and it makes me happy when Willow uses it, I’m not sure why but I suspect you understand. Good luck with the new computer. Always a challenge. That book sounds good. Long ago I read books by Eric Newby that were all about the journey too. Best wishes

    • Thank you so much for your kind comment. I completely understand you, I feel so happy every time Jimi uses something that belonged to Mr. Bowie. Jimi is not much interested in Bowie’s toys, but I’m really glad he’s finally sleeping in that bed.

The Stephen Graham looks very promising indeed, but I’m still in the beginning right now… 😉 Thanks for the Eric Newby info.

    • Hi Patricia. Thank you so much, and don’t worry, Jimi’s keeping an eye on me!
      Jimi sends his regards!

  6. Jimi is such a cutie. He looks comfy. That sounds like an interesting book. I would never go walking alone, but I would enjoy reading about it. ANother good one is The Ride of Her Life by Elizabeth Letts. She basically did that in the 1950’s, but had her horse with her. XO

    • I prefer walking alone. It helps me to clear all the stuff inside my head. Occasionally I’m walking with friends and that’s also very pleasant, having a good conversation and catching up with things that happened.
Thanks for the Elizabeth Letts book, I’ll check it out.

  7. I’m sure Jimi will love the large screen. He will think it is a sign of prosperity. Dear little Jimi, people are doing ridiculous things. Guns everywhere! Remember that cats need not worry about the chaos.

    • Hi Micheline. Thank you so much for your kind words. You’re so right, it would be nice to be a cat in these troubled times and don’t have to worry about anything.
Glad you liked the post, my dear friend! Jimi sends his regards!

    • Oh yes… I wish there was more room so I could join him in this comfy bed…
      Glad you liked the post!

    • Hi Cornelia. I’m always wondering about what’s going on in the mind of cats… Are they thinking or dreaming about us? Are they making plans to get more treats? 😉

I’m using the new computer for a week now. I still have to fix or update some apps and stuff but everything seems to be working fine. It’s so much fun having a fast and powerful computer. And of course, a fresh espresso…

  8. Jimi has such a cute expression on his face! It’s like a human look and he’s saying, “Forget about it” in a New York accent. What a doll. Enjoy your new toys, guys.

    • Hi Polly. Thank you so much for your kind comment. I’m using the “Forget…” quote all the time, with an Belgian NY accent, of course… 😉
Wishing you a great ending of the week. Jimi sends his regards!

  9. Hello Herman and Jimi 🌞 Such a wonderful post you two wrote; full of discovery and contentment. Although we won’t be buying computer things, I do want to read the book you mentioned. I am trying harder to practice gratitude and be more contemplative as the days go by… Hugs to you both from us 💕

    • Hi Christine. Glad you liked the part about the book. I just started reading it and I believe it’s going to give me some peace of mind, or make me look at things and life in a different way.
Thank you so much for the re-tweet! Jimi sends his regards!

  10. jimi yur bed iz totall lee awesum dood! N joy and heerz two happee dreamz😺

herman, hope you like the new mac! you know what’s new today will be ancient
history next week at this time 😺

a happy safe healthy week to you both❤️

    • Hi there, my friends. I’m so happy Jimi finally decided to sleep in this comfy bed. If it was a little bit bigger, I would sleep in it too… 😉

Normally I’m not an early adopter of new hi tech stuff. And I always try to use it as long as possible. But the 8 year old iMac was giving me too much problems so now I’m happy with the new computer. But hey, blame it on the studio technician… 🙂

Wishing you a great ending of the week! Jimi sends his regards!

  11. Jimi looks very pleased on Mr. Bowie’s bed. Has it been 3 years already? I have noticed that here, when a cat has passed on, the others are reluctant to use the deceased cat’s favorite spot for a while. One of the remaining cats finally breaks the ice.

Wishing you the best with the new equipment. Jimi does look pleased about that too! 🙂

The Gentle Art of Tramping by Stephen Graham sounds like a wonderful book for our time in history, too. The world needs more gentleness and kindness.

Have a wonderful weekend ahead, Herman and Jimi!

    • Hi Lavinia. Thank you so much for your kind comment. It’s always a pleasure seeing you here, my dear friend. Next September we’ll celebrate Jimi moving in 3 years ago. He was never interested in Mr. Bowie’s toys and yes, I was much surprised to see him sleep (every day) in Mr. Bowie’s bed. Cats can always surprise you… Right now he loves being outside, from early in the morning to late in the evening. And he enjoys my company too… 🙂

I’m still in the beginning of the book but I got a very good feeling about it. I’m always looking for things that help me find some peace of mind. And a new computer after 8 years is also a good thing… 😉

Wishing you a wonderful weekend, Lavinia! Jimi sends his regards!

  12. Hey, new equipment. Any time you buy something new and fresh, you wonder what took you so long. The new notebook PC I got a year ago, I’m still learning a lot about it. It has a high-end audio card that came standard. Doing the acoustic recording of “Ride Like The Wind” was the first time of trying something like that on a Windows platform. When I try audio mixing at home, I have raw computing power. I bought blade for my server strictly dedicated for audio mixing. I got an eye roll from Laurie when I bought it, lol. But, when it runs audio, it’s like being at a concert. (I played Autumn Nights and Romanza through it, I can hear everyone, from vocals to instruments.)

Tramping, it is being comfortable with every aspect of life. Taking it in and enjoying it. And, if you’re fortunate to share it with a companion, person or furry, so much the better.

    Jimi is enjoying that bed.

[Coming attraction: get ready for some R&B.] 🙂

    • Hi David. Every time I buy new equipment it feels like stepping in a time machine that sends me back to a 16 year old boy. I never lost my enthusiasm. I was waiting for a new 27″ M1 iMac but Apple stopped producing that model and now gives you that Mac Studio model. After one week I’m still surprised by the power and the speed of the M1 chip.
I always used Logic for my music projects, even before it was bought by Apple from Emagic years ago. And everyone (musicians) in my environment is using Apple hardware/software so I never worked with another system.
A new R&B attraction… you can count me in!

Thanks for your wise words about ‘tramping’. I’m trying to enjoy all the little things I encounter each day, like having an espresso in the morning, or ice cream in the garden with the company of Jimi.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend, my friend! Jimi sends his regards!

    • You can already start with the excellent book. It’s a lot cheaper too… 😉
Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend! Jimi sends his regards!

  13. I have a favorite saying/lifestyle/philosophy: it’s not about where I’m going, it’s about where I am. Wherever I’m going, I’ll get there, but I’m here now, so every minute is an adventure. Now you have some good new equipment and Jimi discovered that wonderful bed! It’s where you are, and it’s an adventure. Enjoy your spring dear, and I hope your summer doesn’t get too hot. I remember last year……🤞

    • Thank you so much for your wise philosophical words. I didn’t travel a lot the past years, I just prefer to stay at home and enjoy all the little things around me. I only travel a lot in my head and dreams. And yes, like you said, every minute is an adventure. Especially with Jimi hanging around in the garden… 😉

We’re enjoying the warm spring days and the garden looks so beautiful, fresh and green right now. I told you before, this is my favourite season of the year. Jimi loves to be outside the whole day. It seems he’s enjoying it much more…

As always, thank you so much for the tweet! Wishing you a great week ahead, my dear friend. Jimi sends his regards!

  14. Hey hi hello Belgium boys 💗 Looks like a beautiful set up from Apple. I’ve always been a MAC owner too. You’re lucky you can manage the technicals on your own. I’ve used the live support a few times and unfortunately, the geniuses were disappointing. Admittedly, ‘genius’ is a high bar to set. Friendly though, so that counts 🤣 Jimi looks so content, I’m really happy you have each other 💗 Cheers xK

    • Hi Kelly. I’m using the new stuff for almost 2 weeks now without (almost) no problems at all. But I had to call Apple support once because my internet connection wasn’t stable after a Monterey OS update. The friendly guy on the phone fixed it quickly, thank goodness. The Mac Studio is unbelievable fast and powerful, such a pleasure to work with.
Jimi preferred to go outside, he wasn’t really interested in all those empty boxes. He just loves to be outside and chase the black birds and sparrows… 😉

Have a great week, my dear friend. Jimi sends his regards!

  15. I’m happy to see Jimi has finally made that bed his own. When Ziva passed away, Gibbs would not sleep in her basket, so I gave it to a friend of mine. I wonder now if he would have eventually found his way into her former nest. Herman, I hope you and Jimi are having a good month and enjoying the latter days of spring.

    • Hi Mary. Cats can react very strange when another cat passes away. I wanted to move that bed to anther place but it’s so big… I’m glad I left it there and Jimi finally started to sleep in it everyday. But he’s not interested in Mr. Bowie’s toys.

We’re enjoying the warm sunny spring days. I just love it to have an espresso outside in the morning, with Jimi sitting next to me. But he prefers a bowl with water… 😉

    • Hi Julie. I think that using a computer for 8 years is a long time… 😉 So Jimi said is was time to get a new one with a big box include…
      Glad you liked the post!

    • Thank you so much, Charlotte! The new Mac Studiocomputer is such a pleasure to work with, so much power and speed under the hood. It makes my music productions so much easier and enjoyable.

  16. Felines are a very graceful animal — the way they walk, especially. Definitely God’s artistic side went into the feline creation. …

I’ve written piles of pieces about various pet cats, past and present, and even others’ pet felines. Cats seem to have inspired me most with writing poetry. Although the sonnets are not very good — I adhered to strict parameters: rhyming scheme, 14 lines, 10 syllables each — many other pieces are enjoyable, I’ve been told.

    They’re in a PDF post at: https://fgsjrcatlit.files.wordpress.com/2020/10/that-cat-booklet-pdf.pdf

    • Thank you so much for your comments. Welcome on HoB!
You are so right, cats are such beautiful and wonderful creatures.

      Wishing you a great weekend!

  17. That is the thing about getting a new set up . . . having the stuff you still want/need work with it. I am glad it worked for you. I am sure after all of these months it is running great for you. Perhaps Jimi was just observing a specific (to him) grief period.

    • Hi Terre. Thank you for your comments on the blog. Glad you liked the posts.
It always takes a long time before I buy something expensive. I’m gathering a lot of information to be sure I’m getting the right thing for me.
      Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

      • Me, too. I do a ton of research because I want to make sure I am getting what I want and what I need. Often times I have to make compromises because something will have somethings I want, but not all. And computer stuff is “scary” because you never can be sure it will transfer over and everything will work! But by now you have all the kinks worked out! I am late with my comments. 🙂

        • Changing computers is always very risky… Thank goodness we got internet to look up all the questions we have. I always love to watch a lot of reviews before buying the product.

          • Yeah, the reviews can be very helpful, especially the ones that are more like an “unboxing” or a “tour” of the product. The ones that show you how things work and what they look like.

            • So true. I find it a bit weird that the “unboxing” videos are so popular. I want to see how things actual work…

              • Sometimes I like the unboxing because it does confirm what you are going to get in the box. Some pictures are deceptive (does it come with a cable? is there an adapter? Do I get the famous recording star standing next to the equipment, too?) 🙂
