Casino

Let’s talk about music. But first, let’s talk about something else. I had some busy weeks lately with lot’s of meetings, getting a COVID booster and flu shot, a medical check up, a minor medical issue with Jimi (no worries)… But we’re all doing well.

I had to join my best friend for a meeting with a notary. My friend who owned a publicity agency retired this month and decided to shut down his company. I’ve been a shareholder of the company for many years so I was needed to sign a lot of documents. Afterwards, we went to a local restaurant and had a celebration with delicious pancakes and wine. Later that evening while we were having coffee at his home, my friend showed up with a big box and he said ‘Take it… for services rendered.’ I immediately recognised my favourite dream guitar by the size of the box. What a big surprise!

I’ve been a Beatles fan as long as I can remember. My older sister and brother bought all their albums and I grew up with their music. Last year I watched the Peter Jackson documentary series The Beatles: Get Back 3 times. Get Back received critical acclaim for its coverage of the group’s creative process but I was intrigued by John Lennon’s Epiphone Casino guitar. I immediately started a search to find one but it was almost impossible because this guitar was suddenly hipper and more successful than ever before. After 6 months I gave up the search but my friend kept searching secretly and found one in mint condition on the second hand market. This is the most beautiful gift ever!

Maybe the most iconic image of Lennon’s Casino, and perhaps of Lennon himself, is from The Beatles’ legendary rooftop concert on their Apple Corps office building in London. This was also to be the last public performance of The Beatles.
Jimi took a look at the box but decided that the Casino guitar was more interesting.

Enjoy this beautiful day, my friends, wherever you are. Peace, love and understanding.

  1. That guitar is beautiful and such a wonderful gift. Jimi goes with it really well. That was a yummy looking celebration meal. Congratulations on getting your dream guitar.

    • Thank you so much, Tim! The Casino guitar is my all time favourite guitar, not to play but just to watch. 😉
And yes, those pancakes were so delicious!

Wishing you a great weekend, my friend!

  2. That is wonderful. Your friend obviously thinks you are very special. There is nothing nicer than being able to give a gift that will bring so much pleasure. I am very happy for you. Jimi clearly approves. What a nice portrait of him. Best wishes to you both…and your nice friend!

    • Thank you so much for your kind comment. Yes, this guitar is the most beautiful gift ever and I was so surprised… It really means a lot to me and it’s great to have such good friends.

Glad you liked the post and photographs. Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

  3. WOW……that is a gorgeous guitar and how incredible to be given it by your friend. I think he knew you would treat it with the respect such an amazing instrument deserves! The music you make with that will be special in MANY ways. The photo of Jimi with the guitar is absolutely amazing – should be enlarged and framed – it’s THAT good!

You deserve wonderful things – I am sure Jimi agrees with me…….
    Hugs, Pam (and Teddy)

    • Hi Pam. Thank you so much for your kind comment, my dear friend! Glad you liked the post and photographs.
I was so moved by this beautiful gift from my friend. This means so much to me and I didn’t see this coming. And you can see that Jimi also likes this guitar… 😉

Have a wonderful weekend, my dear friends! Jimi sends his regards!

  4. Omgosh Herman! I’m paws-itively thrilled for you 😘 I’ve read that both Lennon and McCartney used this instrument on some of my favourite music and Paul still owns and covets his ’64’ Epiphone Casino. You are in the company of legends. Such an amazing gift. It’s gorgeous and looks like Jimi thinks so too. I wish we could see your face when you pick it up to rock out ❤️xk

    • Hi Kelly. Thank you so much for your kind comment, my dear friend. I was almost in tears when my friend gave this beautiful present. This means so much to me.
George Harrison also played the Casino guitar. The list of Casino players is very long. Keith Richards also played it in the early Stones years. And recently my name is also on that list… 😉

Wishing you a wonderful weekend, my Canadian friend! Jimi sends his regards! Oh yes, one more thing, so sorry Belgium won the game against Canada early this week… 😉

      • George too !? He was just the nicest man. Is it kizmit that all these young boys came together to make the most iconic and time honoured music our ears have ever known? I don’t know how the powers of the Universe got it so right, but lucky us. Congrats to team Belgium 🙂 It wasn’t our loss for lack of effort. Pretty awesome we made it to the show 💗

        • To be honest, Canada was the best team and didn’t deserve to lose this game.
But for now, let’s listen to some Beatles music… 🙂

    • Thank you so much for your kind comment! Glad you liked the post and the photographs.
      Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

    • Hi Julie. Thank you so much for your kind comment! Glad you liked the post and photographs.
Wishing you a wonderful Sunday evening. Jimi sends his regards!

  5. Congratulations on the best gift ever. Jimi seems to approve which is great! I hope you both have a wonderful holiday season! It seems to be starting off wonderfully.

    • Hi Polly. Thank you so much for your kind comment! Glad you liked this post. This was really a great start to have a wonderful ending of the year…
Hope you’re having a great Sunday!

  6. Jimi and the guitar looks beautiful together! Does he like hearing you play? Our previous cat, Luther, hated it when we played. His ears would go right back.

    • Thank you so much for your kind comment! Glad you liked the post and photograph!

Jimi doesn’t care what I’m doing in the studio. Most of the time I play keys (piano and synth) and I hardly touch a guitar. Mr. Bowie always left the studio when I was working, guess he hated my music… No, he actually had problems in both ears and couldn’t stand high frequency sounds. He also left the room when I was watching sci-fi movies because of the lasers and beamer sounds… 😉

Hope you’re having a great Sunday and enjoying the World Cup football. Not much pleasure watching the Belgium team though… 😦

  7. Finding a mint condition anything on the secondary market is extraordinarily difficult. They are the first ones to be snapped up quickly. Casino guitars, especially. In the guitar world, it’s Fender and Gibson. When it comes to electric, Fender Stratocasters and Telecasters are preferred. Johnny Rivers plays an electric Gibson, don’t quite know which model. Glen Campbell, he was underrated and underappreciated as a guitarist though he played with the legendary Wrecking Crew. He played a lot of strats and one-of-a-kind custom mades by Fender. One story, Glen forgot to bring an acoustic guitar to a concert appearance. He borrowed one from his backing band. He loved the sound of the guitar so much, he kept it. Glen bought a collector Fender to give to his guitarist as a replacement. If you watch the Jimmy Webb session series with Glen, on You Tube, you’ll see the guitar he borrowed.

Daryl Stuermer, another underrated and underappreciated guitarist, he plays an Eric Clapton strat and a few other custom-made guitars. Fender had been chasing after Daryl for a Daryl Stuermer strat over a number of years. They finally caught him 3-4 years ago. It is meant to be a limited production run of 200, and no more. When Fender announced the Stuermer strat, it sold out quickly. Your choice was either waitlist or wait on the secondary market. I chose the waitlist route, knowing the chance a Stuermer strat would be a longshot. When Fender sent the letter asking whether I was still interested, I went for it.

So, how was the pancake breakfast/lunch?

    • Hi David. Thank you so much for your view on electric guitars. To me, the Fender Stratocaster is the ultimate rock guitar. I used to play a cheap Strat imitation when I was a kid. But after an accident at the age of 15, I couldn’t play a guitar anymore due to a permanent disability of my hand, (never really tried to play left handed). My best friend had a synth, but he wanted to be a guitar player so we switched gear and I became a synth/keyboard player.
But I still love to watch guitar videos on YouTube and I’m always getting a good feeling when my friend buys a new guitar.
Visually speaking (and my personal opinion), I think semi-hollowbody electric guitars, like a Gibson ES-335, are the most beautiful guitars. Recently, I was a day to late to buy a red vintage ES-335. Like you said, it’s very difficult to find a good guitar second hands, you’ve got to be very lucky. Like I mentioned in the post, after watching the Beatles Get Back documentary I absolutely wanted a John Lennon Epiphone Casino guitar. Just because it’s such an iconic beautiful looking guitar and it’s giving me such a good and warm feeling. And getting one as a gift from my best friend makes it even more special.

Yes, the pancake lunch was so delicious. We’ve already booked another lunch early December. 😉

    • Thank you so much, Charlotte! Glad you liked this post and the photograph with Jimi. I was completely overwhelmed at the moment I got this wonderful gift. Having good friends and family is a blessing.

    • Thank you so much for your kind comment! Glad you liked this post. The combination of a cat and a beautiful guitar is just perfect… 😉

  8. Oh how happy I am for you to receive such a beautiful gift
Too bad we don’t have sound, so we could listen to you
ps; big hugs to Jimi (who still entered the box) 😉
ps; is that you in the photo?
ps; yum yum, I want to bite into the image of pankakes

  9. Herman, what a wonderful and thoughtful gift from your friend! That truly is a beautiful guitar and I hope you gain many hours of enjoyment from its use, or from simply admiring it. Jimi approves and that’s an added plus. Have a musically awesome day!

    • Hi Mary. Sorry for the late reply, it looks like I missed your comment…
I’m very happy with this gift, it means a lot to me. I’m blessed to have such good friends and family. And of course, there’s also Jimi… 🙂

I’m not going to play a lot on this guitar, I’m actually not a real guitar player. But I enjoy just looking at it. For me it’s such a beautiful and iconic object of a rock & roll era.

      Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

  10. I missed this. Sometimes reader doesn’t show me your blogs and that makes me miss them. What a wonderful gift your friend hunted for successfully and gave to you. Did Jimi have second thoughts about the box after he checked out the beautiful guitar? Enjoy your gift.

    • This happened to me too on a regular base. Sometimes the WP reader seems to have hick ups and is not showing all the posts I want to read.
Thank you so much for your kind comment. I was so moved by emotions when I got this present. It means a lot to me. Having good friends and family is a blessing.
Jimi immediately lost his interest in the box. Mr. Bowie could stay for hours in any box but Jimi isn’t a ‘box-cat’… 😉

Thank you very much for the Tweet!

  11. True happiness for you my friend. The instrument of dreams. I watched the “Beetles Get Back” absolutely enthralled. It was like being a fly on the wall. Actually in the moment a so family song was being created. Peter Jacket is absolutely brilliant. Cheers Virginia

    • Hi Virginia. I was surprised to see how friendly all the 4 Beatles were. They really loved each other and were very good friends.
Thank you so much for your kind words, my friend! Guess it’s time for my second piece of chocolate cake…

  12. I, too, am a big Beatles fan! I had the pleasure to see Paul McCartney live in San Diego when he did his tour right before COVID hit, and he was phenomenal. When he sang Black Bird, I cried. That’s my favorite song by them. Thank you so much for sharing, and I’m glad you got your dream guitar 😊

    • Welcome on the blog! Glad you liked this post!
I missed a Paul McCartney show a few years ago and I still regret it. Black Bird is a wonderful song but it’s very difficult for me to pick just one favourite song…

Thanks for visiting and following the blog. Much appreciated!

      • It was an amazing experience. He was encored back on three times by the audience in San Diego. It was incredible! You’re very welcome 😊 I can’t wait to read more

        • Thank you so much for your kind comment!
I can imagine it must have been an amazing experience. It’s very impressive to see McCartney still performing live and delivering such great shows. A true legend!

    • Hi Henry. Thank you so much for your kind comment.
It was just a perfect day. Getting this iconic guitar as a gift was so wonderful.
      Wishing you a great weekend!

    • Hi Lavinia. Thank you so much for your kind comment. Glad to hear you again. Hope everything is ok.

I’m in quarantaine right now. I got sick last week and thought it was just a cold. But I lost my taste and smell a few days later. Got myself tested and yes, I’m infected with the COVID virus… I don’t know how this happened, I only visited a few stores and shops. So right now I’m taking it easy and enjoying the company of Jimi.

      • I am so sorry you have Covid, Herman. I am guessing you have the Omicron variant which is highly transmissible. Please do take it easy and get well. Cats can catch covid, too. So far, we have been lucky here, though one can catch Covid and not have any visible symptoms. You and Jimi rest up! Have a good week, dear friend.

        • Thank you so much for your concern, Lavinia!
I’m trying to avoid close contact with Jimi, but it’s often a problem… 😉
I’m going to take it easy for 7 more days and let’s hope my taste and smell may return soon…

Have a great week, my dear friend! Jimi sends his regards!

    • Hi Pamela. Thank you so much for your kind comment! Glad you liked the post.
The Casino guitar really sounds so beautiful but I wish I could play like John Lennon… 😉

Wishing you a wonderful 2023 and a good start in January!

    • Hi Mary. Thank you so much for your kind comment and concern!
Jimi’s ok, I’m ok… but we’re both looking forward to spring and warmer days. Thank goodness the days are getting longer…
I know it’s been a while since I posted something on the blog. But I selected some new photo’s of our furry friend and I’m working on a story.
To be honest, I had a hard time getting through the last weeks of the year. I don’t like all the fuss and festivities. Two years ago, my dad past away just after Christmas and I’m still coping with the mourning period. And there were some minor health issues too, but I’m ok right now and enjoying my espressos again… 😉

      • Oh, I completely understand, Herman, especially about your dad. December and January were busy here as well with the holidays and personal appointments. I’m glad we are in February…I feel like I can breathe again and I hope the same for you. Looking forward to your next post!

    • Hi Mitch. Welcome on HoB!
The Epiphone Casino is a very good choice. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. I saw an interview with Paul Weller last week and he’s still playing a Casino guitar on his live shows. He said it’s still one of his favourite guitars.

      • So did McCartney, which carries a lot of weight with me. I’m interested in the smaller, lighter weight Coupe version, which reviewers say plays just like the standard version (and sells for less), but stores don’t have it in stock. So I may have to buy online without trying it out.
