A bridge too low. Last weekend, an important bridge over the Albert Canal in my neighbourhood was demolished, (no controlled explosive demolition, bummer…), a new and bigger bridge will replace it. This means I have to take a short detour to get on the highway if I want to drive to Antwerp, Liège or Brussels. The construction will be finished May 2019. Great photos……will check out the Floating Museum! You know Herman, life is full of detours isn’t it…..and sometimes on the detours we see amazing things we wouldn’t have seen otherwise. Can’t wait to see the new bridge!

I smiled when I saw your post was about bridge. Our bridges were under threat from hurricane Florence flooding but survived intact.thankfully because they were both just rebuilt over the last three years.That museum exhibit did look fascinating and the boat as museum was a great idea.

That really is a bummer that no explosives were used. It seems like they’ve taken all the fun out of demolition these days. At least they are going to replace it with a bigger and better bridge. Are there any artist renditions of what the new bridge will look like? I remember the floating exhibit post.
Hi Tim! I always love to see videos about the demolition of big buildings with explosives… Unfortunately, they used a giant industrial bolt cutter.

Ik heb de afbraak gemist omdat ik het juiste uur niet wist. Alleen jammer dat ze de brug hebben afgebroken en niet opgeblazen met explosieven… 😉
Gisteren hadden ze de omheining niet gesloten en kon je helemaal tot aan de brug fietsen.
Hopefully the new bridge will be worth all the inconvenience in the end. 🙂
The old bridge was too low for special container ships transport on the Albert Canal. They are replacing the old bridges (a lot of them) by new, modern and higher ones. Guess it’s going to be very expensive…
Oh I understand. Still, I do like older architecture and think it sad when it has to go.
I like the combination or mix of old and modern architecture. That’s what I love walking around in Paris…

Perhaps I prefer the old stuff that I grew up with in UK – because there aren’t any really old buildings here in SA – such a new country!

That would be most interesting. lol I found it interesting that the canal was finished in the year I was born also that your grandfather was one of the workers on the canal. You take amazing pictures.

Oh yes, first I was a bit frustrated that I have to take this detour until May next year. But soon I said to myself, hey, who knows what you’ll see the next months!
Progress comes at a price for local residents. We’re just finishing up getting thru the trauma of a new water main on my street. What a mess! Enjoy your travels.

It’s almost over Herman. A couple summer squash are still hanging on, peppers and beans. I’ve started taking the tomato plants down, one of my least favorite things to do. Audrey will still be going after everything else has finished their cycles.
I’m trying to avoid any thoughts of autumn and winter… So sad summer is (almost) over…

Wow! Thanks for this. I always thought our highway people were stupid, but I have to say they would have built the replacement before demolishing the old one . . . or they would have something temporarily in place before they demolished the existing one.
It is not as bad as it looks. There are two detours, both are a 10 minutes drive by car so that’s ok for me. But I’m looking forward to use the new bridge next year.
That’s a huge work! But I do hope they finish the bridge during the winter. Meanwhile, you can take photographs of the work in progress.

Thank you Herman! I am recovering after my flight 🙂 I have been visiting my daughter and her family which comes with jetlag and a lot of sadness as I only see them once a year.

Some might call it ‘a detour’, I might call it, “the scenic route”. Hope your construction stays on track ! We’ve just had a bridge replaced in our city and unfortunately construction delays meant they crossed the finish line 2 years late. Oh well, it is beautiful. We joke, there are two seasons in Edmonton, construction season and winter, LOL ! It’s pretty much true. Hugs and purrs xB
Oh boy, 2 years… I hope they finish the job in May 2019. They did 2 more bridges nearby and stayed on schedule.

They did this replacement bridge building in Cheshire in Runcorn the old bridge used to be free but they put a toll on the new bridge, lots of people are very unhappy and lots have stopped shopping in Liverpool because of it and its put lots more traffic through a nearby town to cut out the bridge altogether.
Hi Charlotte! Oh no… people have to pay now to use the new bridge? No wonder they are very unhappy about this. Is this legal? They didn’t had to pay to cross the old bridge? And it also created more unpleasant situations for other people too… It’s sometimes hard and difficult to understand such decisions…
