Fall Asleep at Work

What’s causing you to be sleepy? This afternoon I was working in the studio on a new song. I was laying down a rough version of the drum track and programming bass sounds on the Minimoog Voyager. I caught the studio technician, Mr. Bowie, sleeping on the job. So what’s wrong here? Do I have to pump up the bass, speed up the tempo, increase the volume level above maximum or learn how to write a really good song?

Falling asleep on the job can risk your employment, Mr. Bowie. Okay, maybe he was taking a power nap. Sleeping just 20 minutes helps activate the right hemisphere of the brain, which is responsible for processing and storing acquired information. I think I need a nap too…

Studio Technician

Job description. Studio technicians, also known as sound engineers, operate equipment used to process and record sound for radio, TV, movies, DVDs, CDs and multimedia. They set up and adjust synthesizers, microphones and headsets in recording booths, operate mixers and audio control panels, and advise performers on how to adjust their vocals. Some recording technicians have only a high-school diploma and receive training on the job from more experienced staff or audio supervisors. However, many employers prefer an enthusiastic cat like Mr. Bowie.

Minimoog

Introducing the Minimoog Voyager. The recording studio still needed a finishing touch. After 2 months waiting patiently, the Minimoog Voyager finally arrived yesterday! All Moog instruments are lovingly handcrafted by real people. The Minimoog Voyager Performer Edition is an all-analog performance synthesizer that incorporates the features and incredible sonic range of the original Minimoog, while adding a vast number of new functional improvements to its design. Many people feel that the Minimoog is probably the best analog synth ever built. Minimoog Voyager users include: Herbie Hancock, Rick Wakeman, Chick Corea, Bernie Worrell, Brian Eno, Stevie Wonder and Mr. Bowie.

The minor issues regarding the communication between the MIDI interface and the synthesizers are almost solved. I met a specialist in a music store who probably knows how to fix a remaining problem. Meanwhile, Mr. Bowie seems to be quite enthusiastic about the new Moog synth. And the big boxes. I liked the Bob Moog quote on the box.

“To be human, to be fully human, is to need music and to derive nourishment from the music you hear. What you do with our instruments helps us to be more human too, and I want to thank you all for that.”

Studio Time

Rock the house. The last few weeks have really gotten busy with dismantling the old recording studio and building it again from scratch. I sold old stuff, bought new equipment and had to rewire all the cables. One of the new synthesizers, the Prophet 12 from Dave Smith Instruments was delivered on Christmas Eve. Hallelujah! Dave Smith Instruments is an American company based in San Francisco, California which manufactures electronic musical instruments. Another synthesizer, the Minimoog Voyager, a monophonic analog synthesizer from Moog Music, will be delivered in Januari 2015.

The next days I’m going to update programs and install new software. Mr. Bowie shows genuine interest in these changes in our house. Especially in all the big boxes.
