A New Routine

‘What if I fall? Oh but my darling: what if you fly?’ – Erin Hanson

Life goes on. I feel that I am ready picking up where we left off then. My Dad passed away about a month ago. We had an intimate ceremony with only 15 people, due to the Covid-19 measures. But I received a lot of messages, phone calls, postcards of people paying respect to my Dad. He was loved by so many people… I still feel an emptiness in my life without him. And pain. Sorrow… But life goes on as normal, but quieter and greyer than usual.

I want to thank you with all my heart. All your heartwarming comments made me feel better and helped me get through these empty and sad days. I sincerely apologise for not replying to your comments. I guess I also missed some of your posts on your blogs. But I will try to catch up…

Jimi helped me to get through the dark days of January. Every day he took a few minutes to sit down by the photograph of my Dad. It made me feel good. But one day, Jimi was very disappointed because there were only vegetables and no shrimps (for him) on my sandwich.

There were also some good days last month. After waiting for 3 months, finally, a big box arrived from the U.S. of A. containing a Sequential Prophet-5 synthesizer. Just like I mentioned in an older post about the ARP 2600 synth, the Prophet-5 synth was also very high on my bucket list and I didn’t expect to get one. Sequential introduced new versions of the old model in 2020. The Prophet-5 is an analog synthesizer designed in 1978 by Dave Smith and John Bowen and was the first fully programmable polyphonic synthesizer.

So yes, life goes on, it’s a cliché and it sounds trite. I will find a new routine and get used to it. But it will take some time. Please stay safe and healthy.

Enjoy this beautiful day, my friends, wherever you are. Peace, love and understanding.

OB-6

How to make a cat and his human happy. A big box from San Fransisco arrived yesterday. Sender: Dave Smith Instruments. Hallelujah! Dave Smith Instruments is an American company based in San Francisco, California which manufactures electronic musical instruments. Inside this box: the OB-6 Desktop, a 6-Voice Polyphonic Analog Synthesizer. The OB-6 is a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration between the two most influential designers in poly synth history, Dave Smith and Tom Oberheim. The OB-6 sound engine is inspired by Tom Oberheim’s original SEM, the core of his acclaimed 4-voice and 8- voice synthesizers.

This is an example of an activity we both enjoy, making music and a studio technician living in a box. Our aim, as I told you before is to rock you, some day soon.

Back to Work

A working studio technician is a happy studio technician. It’s Monday and Mr. Bowie is getting himself back in the groove, after taking some time off on the sofa. Getting great work done isn’t always just about finding a rush of inspiration, it’s also about defining your goals and setting yourself up in a productive work environment.

Mr. Bowie thinks it’s about time to buy a new box with a synth inside. He’s checking out the new Prophet-6, a 6-voice polyphonic analog synthesizer with a modern twist.  It’s Dave Smith’s tribute to the poly synth that started it all—the Sequential Prophet-5. But please, Mr. Bowie, I told you before, you must keep an eye on the studio budget. A studio technician usually performs this routine task. Get back to work, Mr. Bowie!

Boys Keep Swinging

“I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.” – Pablo Picasso

Boys always work it out. The recording studio is almost up and running. I’m experiencing some minor issues regarding the communication between a MIDI interface and the synthesizers. A MIDI setup is the physical connection between all the MIDI devices and the computer. A typical setup consists of a MIDI interface, a computer, and the actual MIDI equipment such as keyboards, sound modules and synthesizers. I’m working to find fixes for the problems. Meanwhile, Mr. Bowie is passionate, excited and eager to learn to play the synthesizer…

Studio Time

Rock the house. The last few weeks have really gotten busy with dismantling the old recording studio and building it again from scratch. I sold old stuff, bought new equipment and had to rewire all the cables. One of the new synthesizers, the Prophet 12 from Dave Smith Instruments was delivered on Christmas Eve. Hallelujah! Dave Smith Instruments is an American company based in San Francisco, California which manufactures electronic musical instruments. Another synthesizer, the Minimoog Voyager, a monophonic analog synthesizer from Moog Music, will be delivered in Januari 2015.

The next days I’m going to update programs and install new software. Mr. Bowie shows genuine interest in these changes in our house. Especially in all the big boxes.
