Hail to the Sleeper!

What an unparalleled viewing experience! I love to watch movies. I love to watch movies in the best possible circumstances. That’s why I stopped going to the theatres and installed a very good home cinema system. So goodbye to the distracting noises of nasty people around me.

Last night I watched ‘Black Hawk Down’, a 2001 war film directed by Ridley Scott, in UHD 4K Dolby Atmos. What a superior way to watch a movie. I was very impressed and didn’t lose focus for a second. But cats look at this in a completely different way…

Mr. Bowie didn’t like watching movies with me. He always disappeared after a few minutes and went to the studio or bedroom upstairs. Jimi prefers to keep me company and sit out the movie. Well, kinda…

Enjoy this beautiful day, my friends, wherever you are. Peace, love and understanding.

  1. Jimi was having fun. He would prefer Ratatouille. 2004 was the last time we went to a theater. People were talking and wouldn’t shut up. Theaters don’t have cats, either. Our cats like to lie on our laps when we watch movies. Spunk actually watches movies. He sits on the edge of the couch and follows the characters. He’s a funny kitty.

    • Hi Tim. Most of the time I was so stressed when the movie was over because people didn’t stop talking are playing with their phones. Now I just have a great time watching movies at home.
Oh yes, Ratatouille… I remember Mr. Bowie watching it with me. I should try this out with Jimi. There’s a good change he stays awake…

  2. So cute. Jimi reminds me of how my Teddy looks while I watch movies. He always stretches out beside me on the couch, but sleeps most of the time. Once in awhile a sound or a voice in the movie will get his attention.

    • Hi Correne. It took a few months for Jimi to get used to hearing noises coming from behind. But now he doesn’t care anymore. Most of the time (99%) he’s just sleeping during the movie…

  3. I’m totally with you, Herman. There are some things that I enjoy about a big screen or a top-end sound system such as you can only experience in a movie theatre, but it’s almost always cancelled out by people wearing suffocating perfume, talking, bringing kids too young for the feature, and in recent years, arriving at their seats with full meals from the concession, which just about gag me. I’d much rather sit in my own comfortable chair, pet a cat, be able to pause the film if i really have to pee or want to think over a particularly emotional moment in the story. And yes, if your viewing companion nods off, it isn’t a problem!

    • I fully agree with your comment. Years ago I tried to talk to these people but most of the time they would get angry. So I decided to stay at home and buy a decent audio system and big screen. Now I can enjoy watching my favourite movies. And I also enjoy the company of (a sleeping) Jimi beside me.

  4. Looks like he was avoiding the nasty bits! Would love a system like yours but part of the point of going to the movies is you can’t put the film on pause. You have to watch to the end in one sitting 😉

    • So true. But that is my only rule when watching a movie at home: it’s totally forbidden to pause the movie. So no candy or toilet breaks in this house while watching movies… 😉

  5. He’s clutching his head as if he’s got a headache! Willow, my grey girl always covers her eyes if she’s trying to sleep when I have the light on at night. As if to say “put it out for God’s sake!” Like the sound of your cinema. Much better than public kind.

    • Hahaha… that’s so funny! Imagine if cat’s could talk, or we could understand what they are saying to us…
Jimi has so many different sleeping positions. Mr. Bowie was not as wild, he never slept on his back.
The home cinema system is really heaven, especially for humans who hate to go to a theatre nowadays… 😉

  6. Well Jimi is there with you anyway, although he felt it was nap time. Bless his heart look how cute he looks all belly up and sleeping. Have a great weekend and enjoy more movies!

    • Hi Christine. It’s always very handy to have a friend by your side when you’re watching a scary movie! Thank you so much for your kind comment, my dear friend! Jimi sends his regards!

  7. That is such a beautiful shot of Jimi. I think in spite of his seeming uninterest in the movie he felt that was good time spent together. From his posture he must have felt very safe and contented sharing quiet time with you.

    • Hi Angela. I couldn’t keep my eyes of Jimi while he was sleeping in that position. He was so adorable to watch. It gives me a very good feeling having him by my side while watching movies.

    • Thanks for this conclusion! I’m looking forward having this conversation next morning when he wakes up… We’re going to need a lot of coffee and cat treats…

    • Oh yes, I love this having him by my side while watching movies. No problem if he falls asleep every time… 😉

  8. I think Jimi would be more interested in films about animals. Also he would prefer to see them when he is awake and alert. I miss out on even a good film if I am tired, and start snoozing through it no matter what’s happening.

    • Hi Greg. Maybe I should see if he stays awake while watching a nature documentary on National Geographic?
I never fall asleep while watching movies. But watching news bulletins is a completely different story… 😉

  9. Hi Herman, this pose of Jimi is very familiar to me, exactly what Moshu looks like when I’m watching a movie on Netflix, I think they are so happy to be close to us and happy that we are happy. Though I love going to the movie theatres , but haven’t done it since like 2 years. Moshu sends greeting to Jimi.

    • Hi Cornelia. I used to go occasionally to a movie theatre for ‘special’ movies like Lord of the Rings, James Bond or the new Dune maybe. But like I said, I’m always getting mad inside so I prefer to watch movies at home nowadays. And what do you need more with a adorable cat beside you?
Wishing you a wonderful weekend! Jimi sends his regards to Moshu!

  10. May cat, Andy, will watch movies with me, though he rarely lasts the whole thing before he conks out and has a nap. He has surprising film interests that don’t usually involve animals.

I agree with you on the matter of movies at the theatre: too many people there for reasons other than to enjoy the movie, and their noise and hustle and bustle are irritations that destroy the movie for me. The last one I watched in the theatre was ET, in 1982! Yes, the audience ruined it for me.

In another one, with friends, a movie filmed mostly in their city became a “Oh! That’s grocery store on such-0and-such!” and “Isn’t that house over on thus-and-so?” It totally ruined that movie for me. One scene was supposedly shot in another town in the state but clearly was filmed in their city. (I even recognized that since it was a university campus where I went to school.) Loudly, they proclaimed it filmed in their city, which I’m sure no one in the audience needed to have them told!

    • Hi Doug. I really enjoyed your comment and fully understand you. But 1982… that’s a long time ago! I think my last movie was the previous James Bond, or maybe that Alien one, don’t know for sure. But nowadays I prefer to stay at home. 4K Blu-rays are not so expensive anymore so occasionally I buy them. And having a cat by your side while watching movies makes it even better…

Wishing you a wonderful weekend, my friend!

    • Ja, het is heel plezant dat Jimi naast mij blijft liggen en heel de film mee uitzit. Bowie was altijd na een paar minuten weg om op het bed verder te slapen. Voorlopig is Jimi nog geen ‘bed-kat’… 😉

  11. How awesome to have such a pro setup for watching movies at home! I agree, cinema goers today are super impolite and it’s all ages. Their feet are on the seats, bright phones in hand and endless conversations. At one movie, a bunch of us got our money back because someone brought a small child who made a huge commotion through the entire movie. We have so many channels at home now, we haven’t gone to a cinema in ages. Besides, a glass or two of wine goes well with a good movie 😉 Not too much though or I’ll be watching the movie just like Jimi, ha 💛 xK

    • Hi Kelly. I fully agree with you. I don’t remember the last movie I saw in a theatre, but it was years ago. It’s a pity… But with my setup I can enjoy the latest movies too. And keep in mind, there’s an adorable cat by my side while watching… 😉

Wishing you a wonderful weekend, my dear friend! Jimi sends his regards!

  12. That is a very sweet photo of Jimi! Some of the cats here like to watch movies. Nod likes to fall asleep during the movie, too.

Have a wonderful weekend, Herman and Jimi! ❤️

    • Hi Lavinia. I’m getting ready for my daily walk. We’re having a sunny autumn day, a bit chilly but perfect for a nature walk. Jimi’s already outside checking out the garden and sitting in the sunlight.

I love watching movies with Jimi, although he falls asleep after a few minutes. But I enjoy his company.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend, my dear friend. Jimi sends his regards!

  13. We’re just back from vacation so I’m catching up on posts! Sounds like a wonderful arrangement you have with the home cinema system and I agree – that’s MUCH better than sitting in a movie theater with people all around making noise……comfy chairs and a cat are much better company I think! Glad you and Jimi are enjoying movies together. I assume there’s chocolate accompanying you too??

    Hugs, Pam (and Teddy)

    • Hi Pam. Hope you had a good vacation!
It’s so much more fun watching a movie with a cat by your side instead of a noisy theatre. Mr. Bowie didn’t like watching movies but Jimi loves to keep me company.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend, Pam!

  14. Concession line at home is a lot shorter and more reasonably priced. Also better selection. I don’t know if you have it in your supermarkets, but we have those striped containers for popcorn to complete the experience. (I generally partake straight from the bag.) For the home theatre experience, you need to have the audio system – AV receiver and the speakers. I use Bose speakers, so I know the sound is going to be good. Important to run your volume loud enough so you don’t hear the phone ring. Loud volume is essential when you hear the Klingon music play. 🙂

Cat and doggy attendance is voluntary in our home. Most of the time, they’re in the other room.

    • Hi David. I was an early adopter of a Home Cinema System many, many years ago. And I made some changes too over all the years. I used to have a 7.1 setup but went back to a 5.1 setup. The shape of my living room wasn’t ideal for a 7.1 setup. The 5.1 setup sounds much better. I use KEF speakers.

I’m not a real popcorn lover, just like Jimi. We prefer other treats to watch movies. And turning the volume up while traveling through a wormhole at warp speed makes it more fun… 🙂

  15. jimi….dood….we noe ewe helped dad watch de moovee….

    happee week a head two ewe N dad….bee happee N healthee 🙂 ♥♥

    • You are so right, my friends! Is there a better way to watch a movie with a cat sitting (or sleeping) beside you…?? I don’t think so… 🙂

Hope you’re having a wonderful week! Jimi sends his regards!

    • Hi Pamela. Oh yes, it’s fun watching movies at home, especially with a cat by your side…
Glad you liked the photograph and post. Much appreciated!

  16. Snoops prefers to watch the television on my son’s lap; Kommando doesn’t really have any patience for it. On the other hand, neither of them tolerate noise coming from the computer. They both know every way to mute it possible. 🙂

    • Jimi hates sounds coming out of my smartphone and the doorbell. Mr. Bowie hated the doorbell too and the sounds coming out the speakers of the cinema system. Jimi doesn’t wake up from lasers and space ships flying at warp speed… 😉

    • Hi Mary. Glad you liked this post!
I love to watch sleeping cats. Staring at them makes me feel safe and relaxed. I really wish I could sleep like a cat.

    • Hi Julie. Glad you liked this post and photograph. Much appreciated!
It gives me a good feeling having such a sweet boy sleeping by my side while I’m watching a movie.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend! Jimi sends his regards!

And I agree about watching movies without annoying people making noises all the time. Your home cinema is perfect. 🙂

  20. I went to the Cinema in the week when it was very quiet to watch the new Bond Film in Glasgow whilst on a tour day off. Great film but I wished I’d have watched the previous bond film before I went to remind myself of the characters.

    • Hi Charlotte. I loved the previous Bond films with Daniel Craig. I’m looking forward te see the new Bond. I’m going to wait to buy the 4K Blu-ray release next month.

    • Sorry to read this… these are such weird times we’re living in.

Apologies for the late respons; I just found your comment in the WP spam folder. Occasionally, WP is doing this randomly…

  21. I have seen this particular pose before!!
My Bluepoint Siamese Siri (a.k.a Seaweed) likes to lay on her back in the sun, and she keeps the sun out of her face with her paw. No matter how she lays, she always looks so relaxed. I envy that ability!

    • Hi Mary. I always enjoy and love to watch sleeping cats. It helps me to relax and find some peace of mind. It must be so wonderful to sleep like a cat. Sometimes I wish I was a cat, especially when it’s time to go to bed…
