Catch

Early in the morning or late in the evening. This is the best time of the day to catch my Dad. Local authorities start to take action against the heatwave and the extreme drought. The Flemish public health authority issued the following advice: ‘drink sufficiently, eat ice cream, and keep yourself and your home cool”. It also advised taking care of others. “Keep an eye on children and animals. Go and visit older people, cats or those who live alone. Are they drinking enough?” the authority said in a statement. “Is their clothing suitable for the temperature? Do they have a cool place to relax?”

Enjoy this beautiful day, my friends, wherever you are. Peace, love and understanding.

  1. I love the part about eating ice cream……every Public Health Authority should encourage that all over the world don’t you think? Your Dad looks fabulous – he’s got the BEST smile but then he’s looking at YOU so of course he’s smiling………………….

Stay cool……….we are following the Flemish public health authority’s advice here too!
    Pam (and Teddy)

    • Thank you so much for your kind comment, Pam! But I’ll confess: I added the part about eating ice cream myself… So sorry… 😉
Wishing you a wonderful weekend, my dear friends!

  2. A picture with the best tenderness of a son for his father. For Venezuela we do not have that climate. I live on the Island of Margarita and although it rains sometimes, the sun is all over. Thanks for your wishes.

    • Thank you so much for your kind comment, my friend. I hope you’re okay. We read a lot of articles and see on the tv-news about how tense the situation remains in Venezuela.
      Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

    • Hi Tim! Unfortunately, I made the ice cream part up. Sorry for the deception. Wish our local authority would be funnier in their statements. I’m sure the people would appreciate this…especially during this hot weather.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend, my friend!

    • Thank you so much, Sarah! He’s having a hard time due to the heat. Thank goodness temperatures will drop down next Wednesday.
      Wishing you a wonderful welkend!

  3. That is a great photo of your Dad, Herman. Keep plenty of ice cream in stock, and stay cool, all of you! I like the fact your Flemish public health authority advised taking care of others, too. We need more of that in this world.

Have a wonderful day, Herman and Mr. Bowie! Mr. Nano says he is going to try to send you some cooler weather.

    • Hi Lavinia! Thank goodness, temperatures will drop down somewhere next week. My Dad is having a hard time right now. But he’s also doing what I’m doing, drinking a lot of water and having ice cream on a daily basis. 😉

Wishing you a wonderful weekend, my dear friend! Mr. Bowie says “Meow!” and sends his regards to Mr. Nano!

PS: bought extra ice cream yesterday… 😉

    • Thank you so much for your kind words, my friend! My Dad is having ice cream on a daily basis, maybe that’s the trick… 😉
      Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

    • Hi Greg! So true, we stay indoors during the daytime. It’s way too hot right now. We’re having lots of cool water and… ice cream, of course!
      Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

  4. What a lovely snap shot 😀
It must be very hard to deal with constant heat when you are not used to it.
Yes, drink plenty of cold water, keep cool, do not over exert yourself, but also – here’s my tip that I didn’t hear of for years in SA – You need to increase your salt intake too, because you are sweating it out – even if you don’t think you are.
I don’t mean excessively, but most diets are very low in salt, so all I’m saying is, maybe you need to eat a little on the very hot days. It does help.
And of course – ice cream! 😀 . . . I finally bought some more myself today. Yum! 😀

    • Hi there, my dear friend! Thank you so much for your kind comment and advice. Concerning the salt intake: we had French fries with a lot of salt today! 😉 And yes, ice cream afterwards, of course! Thank goodness the temperatures will drop down next week…
Glad to read you finally bought yourself delicious ice cream. Enjoy!
      Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

    • Ja!

  5. I’m very sure that the staff copy writer for the Public Health wished they had put the part in about ice cream….and I’m pretty sure the part about cats was yours (and Mr. Bowie’s too)…
Much to my surprise one of my neighbors checked on me this week. She’s someone I can count on to run errands for me and she hadn’t heard from me in a couple of days. She did say that my apartment was cooler than hers. I just close it up by 9 or 10 every morning and turn on my oscillating fan. It stays that way until the outside is cooler than the inside. Oh, yes, my grocery delivery contains at least one pint of ice cream a week.
In case you didn’t know the third Sunday in July is International Ice Cream Day.
I have memories as a child of my father gathering the ingredients and hand churning ice cream at least once every summer. Maybe that’s the day he did it.

    • Hi Misha! Thank you so much for your kind comment and your story about your dad.
You are so right about the cat part too, I thought it would be funny to jazz up that statement from the authority. I didn’t know about the International Ice Cream Day in July… How could I missed this important event? Oh well, for me every day is ice cream day… 😉
That was so beautiful of your neighbour to check how you were doing. Always good that you can count on somebody…
Wishing you a wonderful weekend, my dear friend!

  6. Such a great portrait. Same orders here and something special, one town opened a ice hockey place to everybody having too hot. People sat there drinking coffee and enjoying the cool air. One shop kept their doors open at night, so that people can come to sleep there, if they have too hot in their homes.
It is getting cooler here up north.

    • Hi there, my friend from the High North! Thank you so much for your kind comment. I wish some shops would keep their doors open at night in this part of the world. I would definitely pay them a visit because it’s 30 degrees (or more) in my bedroom… Thank goodness temperatures will drop down from next Wednesday.
Wishing you a wonderful and cool weekend!

  7. Ice cream goes well with any weather! Of course, I don’t need the extra calories so I moderate my consumption. Yeah. Something like that! Stay cool!

    • I’m visiting my Dad 3 times a day, just to be sure he’s ok. I’m checking if he’s drinking enough water and stays out of the heat…
I don’t like cold or iced coffee. I drink it once in a while but I prefer hot strong espressos. But frozen chocolate? That’s alright by me… 🙂
Wishing you a marvellous weekend, my friend!

  8. I don’t have air conditioning and people look at me like I’m from Mars. It’s very standard in the US, even in parts that don’t really need it but i think in much of Europe that is not true. I am glad you are close to your Dad so you can check on him. I have been watching the cats closely and we have multiple water fountains and of course are indoor only but my house is not well insulated against heat so we siesta a lot.

    • Hi Angela! In this part of the world (West Europe) not many people have airco in their houses. You can find airco in shopping malls, working places… I always notice (on tv) that almost every home in the US has airco.
I’m just taking it easy, relax, have a lot of water (and ice cream) when it’s too hot. And like you said, we siesta a lot!

  9. Your dad looks like a sensible dresser. I’ve been told mature people (not old) are always cold. So I hope that’s true, because if it keeps getting hotter, that’s going to come in handy. It’s smart to look in on our loved ones regardless of the weather, but even more important at these times. If I ever see someone leaving an animal in there vehicle in this heat, I’m going to have to rip them a new one (ooops, did I say that outloud?) Stay cool friends xo Boomdee

    • My dad always wants to dress up like it’s winter, even now when it’s so hot. So funny, I have to keep an eye on him to be sure he’s wearing the right clothes to feel comfortable during these warm days.
A few days ago a mother left her baby in her car while she went shopping. The police had to smash the window to free the little one…

      • Yes ! A caring eye on your dad with keep him more comfortable.
As for the Mother, she said serve detention or some penance. Better yet, make her sit in a car, in the sun, until she passes out. That’s beyond careless. Perhaps there’s intent? I hope not. It has happened here too, even with never ending warnings. I don’t know what’s wrong with these people. x K

        • If I remember correctly, the woman got a ticket from the local police and she has to appear in court…
          Have a wonderful weekend, Boomdee!

    • Hi Julie! Thank you so much for your nice comment! Always love advice about ice cream… 😉
Thank goodness it’s much cooler today. My dad had a hard time during the hot days.

    • Hi Inese! Thank you so much for your kind words and concern! My Dad had a hard time last weeks. But now he’s feeling better because it’s much cooler. And he’s having ice cream on a daily basis too… 🙂
Wishing you a wonderful weekend, my dear friend!

  10. Super photo of your Dad, us Northerners just aren’t used to this beautiful weather, I’ve loved the extra 5 degrees in London but when that was topping the thermometer 🌡 i tried everything from wet flannels on the fan, to bottles of melting ice water in front of the fan until my Dad told me off for not having it in a drip tray when it was near the electric cables (whoops). Finally I have a small cold air humidifier and I put that in front of the fan that worked quite well.

We’ll soon be hoping for sunshine 🌞 back again now the weather is turning autumnul 🍃🍂🌨 😄.

    • Hi Charlotte! Thank you so much for your kind comment.

This is so funny, I tried almost all the same things like you did… And I bought some extra fans, especially for my Dad’s apartment. He had a hard time during the hot days from last weeks. Fortunately, temperatures finally dropped.
I think is typical for us humans to complain about the weather; it’s too cold, too hot, too wet, too dry… And just like you said, we’ll soon be missing the sun and the warm weather from this summer… 😉
