Blood Moon

Will the world end tomorrow? According meteorologists an exceptional heatwave has been sweeping across the Northern Hemisphere for several weeks, setting record high temperatures and causing drought and wildfires. They also say the summer weather conditions are a result of climate change. “2018 is shaping up to be one of the hottest years on record, with new temperature records in many countries,” said Elena Manaenkova, deputy secretary-general of the World Meterological Organisation (WMO).

In order for a heatwave to be declared in Belgium the temperature must rise above 30°C for three days in a five day period in which highs of 25°C or more are recorded.  Officially, Belgium has been experiencing a heatwave since 22 July. Today, the temperature reached 37ºC, one of the hottest day ever measured in this part of the world.

Mr. Bowie stays inside and out of the sun during the day. He’s catching some zzz’s on the cellar door, probably the coolest place in the house. An early morning walk seems to be the best under this weather conditions.

Unfortunately, tonight, we missed the longest ‘Blood Moon’ ever, the eclipse of the century. I was waiting with my camera but clouds appeared in the evening and blocked our view. Oh well, life goes on… and on. Don’t panic! The world as we know it isn’t about to end.

Enjoy this beautiful day, my friends, wherever you are. Peace, love and understanding.

For the greenhouse theory to operate as advertised, i.e. warming the earth by 33 C, requires a GHG up/down/”back” LWIR energy loop to “trap” energy and “warm” the earth and atmosphere.

For this GHG up/down/”back” LWIR energy loop to operate as advertised requires forcing energy from an ideal black body, i.e. 1.0 emissivity, LWIR of 396 W/m^2 from the earth’s surface. (K-T diagram)

The earth’s surface cannot provide that much LWIR because of the contiguous participating media, i.e. atmospheric molecules, moving over 50% ((17+80)/160) of the surface heat through non-radiative processes, i.e. conduction, convection, latent evaporation/condensation. (K-T diagram)

Because of these contiguous turbulent non-radiative processes at the air/surface interface the oceans and lands cannot possess an emissivity of 0.97, actual emissivity being 63/396 = 0.16. (K-T diagram)

No GHG LWIR energy loop & no RGHE means no CO2/man caused climate change and no Gorebal warming.

  2. Mr. Bowie and my Bluepoint Siamese cat (Ms. Siri) would get along perfectly.
Lately, we have had days of 103 and 105 degrees (Fahrenheit) and she is basically doing the same thing–sleeping stretched out on the floor of an air-conditioned house. Cats are smart. I am sure that Mr. Bowie would agree)!

    • Hi Mary! You are so right, cats are very smart… I’m sure Ms. Siri is a very wise cat!
Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend, my friend! Stay cool and have some ice cream.

  3. You’re having much hotter weather than we are, Herman. I detest heat waves as much as I detest the minus zero weather in winter. There’s really no way to combat either other than to stay inside as much as possible. I hope you and Bowie are keeping hydrated and staying safe from the heat extreme.

    • Hi Mary! I fully agree with your comment. Meanwhile we’re staying indoors and enjoying our treats, water, espresso, ice cream…
Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend, my dear friend!

  4. We are not quite as hot as we were a couple of weeks ago but the humidity is extremely high and it makes it seem so much hotter, I have been reduced to drinking iced coffee. We don’t eat until the sun goes down either. Mr Bowie is smart to avoid the sun. Please both of you, stay cool,

    • Hi Angela! Thank you for your comment, my friend. It’s still way too hot outside so we stay inside… Like I said before, thank goodness we have plenty of water and ice cream…
Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend!

    • Oh yes, he’s a very wise cat and stays inside while it’s so hot outside…
Wishing you a wonderful weekend, my friend!

    • Hi Bernadette! Everybody was disappointed and complaining they couldn’t shoot pictures of the Blood Moon. So strange, we had no clouds for days and suddenly in the evening they appeared…
Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend, my dear friend!

  5. Very cool that you get to experience yet another end of the world, even though you’re really hot (37º C is the same temp we have most days this time of year, but with our low humidity it’s much more tolerable). As you know I have photographed several astronomical events over the past several years, each one thought to be “the end of the world”. I can’t see this blood moon from Corrales, but I hope you enjoy what you can see of it. Chocolate, espresso and catnip to celebrate the end of the world.

    • Hi Tim! I was thinking about your photographs when I was preparing myself for the Blood Moon. So I was disappointed when suddenly the clouds appeared in the evening. But like you said, we celebrated the end of the world instead… 😉
Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend, my dear friend! I like your posts and photographs about your visit in Paris. Maybe you can pay Mr. Bowie a visit the next time? 😉

      • I’ve missed a couple of blood moons because of the clouds, which were especially frustrating because we have mostly clear skies out here. The next ICCG is in Antwerp in 2020. So we may see you then.

        • Alright! Antwerp is a 30 minutes drive by car (40 minutes by train) so that’s very close. Looking forward meeting you guys!

    • Oh yes…!! That sounds very delicious, according to Mr. Bowie!
Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend, my friend!

    • Oh yes, that would be great… I’m so tired of this heat and like I mentioned before, thank goodness for all the ice cream! And it remains so warm at night, so hard to sleep too…
Hope you’re having a marvellous weekend, my friend!

  6. We’re having a horribly hot time too and suffered the cloud blocking the blood moon too! What a shame. But, a storm will come and things will get better. Enjoy the cool water and the hot espresso and ice cream if you can get it 😉

    • Always following the wise advice I’m getting in the comments… Cool water, hot espressos and ice cream sounds very very good to me…
Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend, my dear friend!

  7. We’ve had horrible weather as well here in Virginia…..endless rain, high humidity, terrible storms, heat waves. It just goes on and on and on. We work around it – take advantage of small periods of relief – Teddy goes out on his leash for a walk when it’s possible otherwise he’s napping in the cool house (so are we!). We can’t do a thing about the weather but work with it and hope for better days. We had hoped to get some photos last night of the blood moon but had a storm instead. Stay cool dear friends……ice cream helps (so does chocolate!).

    Hugs, Pam and Teddy too

  8. It was just way too hot here for several weeks, but nothing like the fires in the western part of our country and the weather reports I’m seeing from Europe. Stay cool, you and Mr. Bowie. Thanks to the blessings of A/C! Be safe and well my friend. No one knows what tomorrow will be, but we each have Today.

    • Looking forward for cooler weather and rain. But like you said, no one knows what tomorrow will be or bring, but okay, there will be always ice cream, espresso and chocolate, of course!
Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend, my dear friend! Happy gardening!

      • Working on another gardening blog! We count our blessings, and they include gardens, chocolate and ice cream! I bought some ice cream yesterday, cos life is short. Have a good and peaceful weekend.

        • Thank you so much, my dear friend. Looking forward to read more about your adventures! Don’t forget to have a break and ice cream.

    • Yes, it is really unbelievable and unbearable! Kosmo is a very wise cat to move in the basement.
Let’s hope we’re going to get some cooler weather the next days and weeks…
Mr. Bowie says “Meow!” and sends his regards! Hope you’re having a wonderful (cool) weekend, my dear friends!

  9. Herman, soon your heatwave becomes a memory. Temperature in Ireland has dropped to 19 degrees, and no, we didn’t see the Moon either. It started raining yesterday afternoon after two month of drought, and stopped raining after the midnight. So unfair.
Hope you are well and have enough ice cream and tap water to survive the extreme temperatures.

    • Hi Inese! So glad you’re back on HoB. We missed you. Hope everything is alright and you’re okay.
I’m ok and Mr. Bowie is ok. We only need a lot of fresh water and ice cream to get trough the day. Wish we could meet somewhere in the middle; our heatwave and your 19 degrees…
Wishing you a wonderful weekend, my dear friend! Mr. Bowie says “Meow!” and sends his regards!

  10. I am getting a slow start today. I cannot read all these comments so forgive me if I repeat something. Blood Moon is sort of a gruesome name for it–named no doubt in the Middle Ages I guess. Did not appear this hemisphere so no late night for me. Well, actually it is above seasonable temps here too, and to hot to sleep at least early on, then it gets cold! Cats usually find a cool spot somewhere in the house on their own. Mine like the swivelling fan going back and forth! Hope you make it thru your heat wave OK. Remember, it is just practice for next year!!!

    • Hi Greg! Thank you for your comment, my friend! I’m having a hard time to sleep at night. The temperatures also stay way too high during the nighttime. Maybe I should join Mr. Bowie in the garage/storage place (his bedroom), that’s the coolest place in the house… and that’s where I keep the ice cream in the fridge.
Oh, and thank you for reminding me that this is only practice for next year… Very good to know indeed!
Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend!

  11. Wow! 37C is way too hot! No wonder poor Mr Bowie is flaked out!
We had a very good view of the Blood Moon here in Cape Town – clear skies and it was already dark, so it was easy to watch the shadow progress across the face of the moon. 🙂

    • We had a temperature of 38,5°C at 2 places in the country. Way too hot… Temperatures will drop below 30°C the next days. Thank goodness…
We missed the Blood Moon but had a delicious ice cream (vanilla and coffee flavour with chocolate sauce) instead! 😉
Hope you’re having a wonderful Sunday, my friend!

    • It was beautiful, I guess, judging by the photographs and the news on tv.
Hope you’re having a wonderful day!

  12. It seems like the earth is boiling, the heat is affecting the entire globe. Here in California we have horrible fires. Have you ever tried, espresso ice cold topped with Vanilla ice cream and wipped cream, back than I Germany it was my favorite called Eis Kaffee. Stay cool Mr. Bowie.

    • Hi Cornelia! Thank you so much for your tip about the cold espresso. We have something similar in Belgium like your Eis Kaffee. Good advice to stay cool for humans…
Hope you’re having a wonderful Monday, my dear friend!
Mr. Bowie says “Meow!” and sends his cool regards!

  13. It has been so hot and dry here too, Herman. Our annual summer drought came early. The cats and crew here send Mr. Bowie their best! Mr. Nano says, “Stay cool!”

    • Hi Lavinia! Hope the drought doesn’t effect all the plants and fruit at Salmon Brook Farms to much… Our weather isn’t changing for the next 10 days. Wish the temperatures would drop down… We’re getting tired of eating all that ice cream! 😉
Hope you’re having a wonderful Monday, my dear friend! Mr. Bowie says “Meow!” and sends his regards to all the cats and crew at the Farm!

    • Thank you so much for your advise, Cat Lady! Weatherman says another heat wave is coming next week… I really wish temperatures would drop down now…
Mr. Bowie says “Meow!” and sends his regards to Lexington and Bobcat!

    • Hi Julie! I really wish temperatures would drop down now… but still hot weather for the next 10 days. We’ll sure follow your advise concerning the iced espresso and iced milk!
      Hope you’re having a wonderful (winter)day!

  14. Omgosh, 37 C !? That’s insane isn’t it? Thank you for ensuring the continuation of the planet my friend. Bit perhaps not as we know it. Poor Mr Bowie must be so uncomfortable in the heat. We were forecast for extreme heat all week too. Luckily, the smoke from fires in a neighbouring province are blocking out the sun. Good Grief, when there’s a silver lining in an out-of-control wild fire, things are getting a bit crazy. Not surprising, I feel better after visiting here ❤ Thank you team Bowie!

    • Hi Boomdee! You are so right, my dear friend, things are getting a bit crazy out there…
Thank goodness the temperatures dropped down, it’s about 25°C today but we’re having a lot of thunderstorms.
So glad you’re feeling better after your visit. You rock, my friend!
