Keeping Safe

Don’t bother cats. When cats are sleeping, and you wake them up by touching them, they can become surprised or scared and try to bite. To wake up your cat or any other cat, stand far away and call the cat’s name. And if you don’t know the cat, do not wake him up. Just leave him alone.

Life is full of choices. Choose carefully. You can choose between nail marks caused by a right paw scratch or a bleeding nose caused by a sharp left jab. Choose wisely or live the rest of your life in regret…

  1. I thought the expression was “Let sleeping dogs lie.” Obviously, it was originally meant for cats, although I can rarely get close enough for danger. Even asleep, they hear too well my approach and wake up to give me that look of “And what were you about to do?”, rather like Mr. Bowie’s expression in that great picture

    • That’s called ‘poetic license’, Angela. The liberty taken by a blogger in deviating from conventional form or fact to achieve a desired effect. 😉

  2. Mr. Bowie is looking rather intense in that photo, but beautiful as always in his grey suit! Speaking of nails, I can clip nails easily on all the cats except Willow. When hers get done, I can get peed on, scratched or bitten. It’s a major operation. No tummy scratches either – she doesn’t like those. She was rescued rather late in her life, and we don’t know a lot about her history. She’s geting better though, a bit at a time.

    • I’m sure that Willow is very lucky to have a good home…
Mr. Bowie likes tummy scratches, but only early in the morning and late at night. I’m not joking…

      • When we found her, she was in the vicinity of 6 lbs. We took her in to the vet, and had her fixed up. The usual worms and fleas on top of a horrific bladder infection. She has a congenital bladder defect, and still leaks urine when she sleeps, and I put towels down everywhere she settles in. We intially tried to place Willow, as we already had 5 cats at the time. No one wanted a special needs cat, especialy an old special needs cat (she’s probably in the neighborhood of 17 or 18) so we kept her. She bonded with Rick’s 93 year old mother, and the two are inseparable, almost like it was meant to be. I don’t know which one of them will go first, but the one left will be very unhappy without their companion. She will always have a home here. Time, patience and good food always win in the end. And sometimes helped with a little catnip 🙂

        • Oh Lavinia, I really respect the effort you put into helping Willow! Your story moved me, this is so beautiful. Thank you for this heartwarming comment!

              • As of tonight, a hapless pigeon joined the ranks. I was downtown with Mom running errands when a pigeon started wandering in and out of traffic. Couldn’t fly, has damaged wings. Probably clipped by a car. Pulled over and got the bird before anyone could hit him. He’s here now, taking it easy in a ventilated box I use for catching bee swarms. Called the local wildlife center, will probably end up driving the bird over there tonight.

  3. From the look on Mr Bowie’s face, I’m guessing he might have left you with a few nail marks and a bloody nose 🙂 BTW dogs are liars. It doesn’t matter if they are awake or sleeping they lie. There’s nothing you can do about it other than simply “let sleeping dogs lie.” Now cats, on the other hand, have no need to lie since they rule the world. Therefore, as you have forewarned “let sleeping cats be.”

  4. He he he I know what all these mean 🙂 Thank you dear Herman, but please let them to know opposite of this 🙂 especially while I am sleeping I don’t want to be disturbed 🙂 Love, nia
