How to be patient with cats. Patience is a virtue that can be instilled in cats. Patience teaches cats the value of delaying gratification, a skill necessary for maturity. Here are a few ideas that can help you teach your cat to wait without whining:
Be a role model. Teach cats patience behavior by showing them how. Be aware of your words and body language when you have to wait for something. Keep your expectations reasonable. Patience level for every cat differs at each age. Observe your cat to understand what comes natural to him. Try not to fix everything immediately. Whenever your cat asks for something, ask him to wait for a brief period. Start with 15 seconds and gradually increase it to a minute over a week.
Mr. Bowie, 3 seconds later… ‘You may open the fridge now!’
Based on an eHow.com article.
Right now! MEOW!
A well-spoken cat!
En wat met gooien van spullen?
Zijn daar regels voor?
Au!!! Dat doet pijn…
I can see that Mr Bowie is becoming skilled in the art of patience. He must have a good teacher.
Two words: chocolate, patience…
But how can anyone be patient around chocolate?
You got me there…
Mr Bowie! Remind your staff who is in charge!
We take note of that…
Mwahahaha. Is this some strange parallel universe Herman?
Guess I’ve been watching to many Star Trek episodes lately…
Patience? Not in Sam’s vocabulary……
Pam
Why am I not surprised…?? Can I have some bacon now?
With emphasis on the “NOW!!”…………
Pixel is laughing!
I think you should explain this post again to that cat…
He’s laughing at the concept! He says he is imagining the look of disdain on Mr Bowie’s face as his human attempted to teach him such an un-cat-like attribute 😉
I didn’t know there was such a word…. HMC
Well my friend, you are never too old to learn…

A freelance eHow writer with too much time on his or her hands. I like the parallel universe comment. My very thought exactly. –Bugs
Sounds scary though… think I’ll stay on this side of the universe…
Ha! Good luck with the cat patience thing. You’ll need patience for that.
So, it’s the other way around…??
Meow , Meow Scary Meow 🙂 ❤
Is this meowing within the time span of 15 seconds…??
My older cat has a meow as piercing as a police siren… no way am I listening to that for 15 seconds!!!
Well okay, that’s a good excuse…
What a handsome kitchen helper you’ve got Herman. My hubby never likes the cats up on the counter, I just think that’s what soap and waters for…LOL. Ha, I saw a cat the other day on Youtube, opening a patio door for a bunch of little dogs who were hopelessly looking in. Cat’s are very smart. Our little Petals is the Princess of Patience. She’ll sit on the floor and stare at me for 5-10-15 minutes……as long as it takes to wear me down. She wants a Wiska’s treat and knows how to get one…HA.
You can never beat a staring cat, they will always win!
PS: the blond pillow thief doesn’t mind if Bowie’s up on the counter…
I think that pillow thief is a smart girl…even if she’s blonde 😉
Cats and patience…good luck with that!
Guess I’m going to need that…
Or as Tigger likes to say, “If you don’t get out of bed and feed me right now I will play with the window blinds and make as much noise as possible until you do. What? It’s 3AM? I didn’t know that since I am a cat, after all, and I can’t tell time. So…get up…noooooooooow!”
(This is all said with an English accent because I firmly believe that if Tigger could talk she would have an English accent. 🙂 )
Ha ha ha … And that’s why we still love them, but not at 3AM… 😉
Juliette is the impatient one here. She is telling me when it’s time for dinner, and she decides it is, not me. The two other cats just sit next to me and wait, but Juliette will meow until I finally get up. No matter how long I have tried to make her wait in the past (15 minutes, 20 minutes,…) she never learned patience.
Bowie is only impatient when he wants to go outside. He starts jumping against the glass door if I’m not there in 15 seconds…
Sweet!
Thanks Marilia!
Maybe your fridge needs a cat door?! 🙂
But how can I tell if the light in the fridge goes off or on when Mr. Bowie uses the cat door…??
Haha, I would assume that little light is going to be staying on!
You’d need to borrow Schrödinger’s cat for that…
Mom says patience is not a word we know. Of course she doesn’t know it either!
I know a handsome cat helps, but these are fantastic shots! Love those eyes, beautiful.
Welcome on HoB Scott! Thank you very much for checking out and liking so many posts on HoB. Much appreciated!
That’s absurd…wait without complaining. Who’s cock-eyed idea was that? Purrs and hits, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Josette
Hahaha, who’s training whom? 😀
Ha! Your human is hilarious, Mr. Bowie!!! 😀
Hey Pedro, is that a compliment? 😉
Absolutely – a laughing cat is a happy cat, and there’s nothing more funny than a human that’s trying to teach a cat something!
