Teaching Cats Patience

How to be patient with cats. Patience is a virtue that can be instilled in cats. Patience teaches cats the value of delaying gratification, a skill necessary for maturity. Here are a few ideas that can help you teach your cat to wait without whining:
Be a role model. Teach cats patience behavior by showing them how. Be aware of your words and body language when you have to wait for something. Keep your expectations reasonable. Patience level for every cat differs at each age. Observe your cat to understand what comes natural to him. Try not to fix everything immediately. Whenever your cat asks for something, ask him to wait for a brief period. Start with 15 seconds and gradually increase it to a minute over a week.

Mr. Bowie, 3 seconds later… ‘You may open the fridge now!’

  3. My older cat has a meow as piercing as a police siren… no way am I listening to that for 15 seconds!!!

  4. What a handsome kitchen helper you’ve got Herman. My hubby never likes the cats up on the counter, I just think that’s what soap and waters for…LOL. Ha, I saw a cat the other day on Youtube, opening a patio door for a bunch of little dogs who were hopelessly looking in. Cat’s are very smart. Our little Petals is the Princess of Patience. She’ll sit on the floor and stare at me for 5-10-15 minutes……as long as it takes to wear me down. She wants a Wiska’s treat and knows how to get one…HA.

  5. Or as Tigger likes to say, “If you don’t get out of bed and feed me right now I will play with the window blinds and make as much noise as possible until you do. What? It’s 3AM? I didn’t know that since I am a cat, after all, and I can’t tell time. So…get up…noooooooooow!”

(This is all said with an English accent because I firmly believe that if Tigger could talk she would have an English accent. 🙂 )

  6. Juliette is the impatient one here. She is telling me when it’s time for dinner, and she decides it is, not me. The two other cats just sit next to me and wait, but Juliette will meow until I finally get up. No matter how long I have tried to make her wait in the past (15 minutes, 20 minutes,…) she never learned patience.

    • Bowie is only impatient when he wants to go outside. He starts jumping against the glass door if I’m not there in 15 seconds…
